Exam Centres for Derby

Derby sits neatly between two City & Guilds exam centres, giving you a choice of where to sit your 2382-26 exam depending on which direction suits you.

Nottingham is the closest option for most Derby electricians — the centre is located at 50–51 Westminster Building, Theatre Square, Nottingham NG1 6LG, right in the city centre and straightforward to reach from Derby via the A52 or by train.

Birmingham offers a convenient alternative, particularly if you’re working in the south of Derbyshire or travelling through on a regular basis. The centre is at the 6th Floor, Gateway House, High St, Birmingham B4 7SY — well-placed for public transport connections from Derby.

Alternatively, the home-based exam option is available every week and requires no travel at all — exams are fully invigilated via webcam and results come through typically on the same day.

Why Derby Electricians Are Renewing Now

Derby is one of the UK’s most industrially active cities. Alongside the well-known presence of Rolls-Royce, Alstom and Toyota — who collectively represent a vast amount of industrial electrical work across the area — there’s a busy construction sector with major housebuilders active across Derbyshire, and a growing pipeline of commercial and infrastructure work throughout the city and surrounding towns.

Electricians working across the region are encountering the updated regulations constantly — whether on industrial sites, new-build residential developments, commercial fit-outs, or maintenance work tied to NICEIC and NAPIT scheme memberships. Both NICEIC and NAPIT require current 18th Edition certification for approved contractor and competent person status. If your certificate is dated before Amendment 4, your knowledge base is behind the current standard — and scheme renewals will catch up with that.

Amendment 4, published in April 2026, introduced important updates to BS 7671 covering areas including EV charging installations, battery storage systems, and solar PV. For electricians working on domestic and commercial installs across Derbyshire, these are day-to-day areas where the updated standard already applies.

Who Typically Books This Course

The electricians booking the City & Guilds 2382-26 from Derby and the surrounding area tend to fall into a few clear groups:

  • Self-employed electricians in Derby, Ilkeston, Ripley and Belper keeping their qualifications current for domestic and commercial work
  • Electrical contractors working on new-build sites across Derbyshire needing up-to-date certification for site sign-off
  • Industrial electricians on maintenance contracts at manufacturing facilities — including supply chain businesses connected to the major employers in the area
  • Sole traders renewing ahead of NICEIC or NAPIT scheme assessments
  • Apprentices and recently qualified electricians sitting the 18th Edition for the first time as part of their professional development

If any of those descriptions fits you, the course is ready when you are.

Local Questions Answered

Is there an exam centre in Derby itself? There’s no City & Guilds exam centre in Derby city centre, but Nottingham is very close — around 15 miles away — and easy to reach via the A52 or East Midlands Railway. Birmingham is also accessible by direct train from Derby in around 40 minutes. Many Derby candidates find it simpler to choose the home-based option and avoid the journey entirely.

Does Amendment 4 mean I need to retake the exam even if I passed recently? It depends on when you last sat it. If your certificate pre-dates Amendment 4 (published April 2026), your qualification remains valid but it no longer reflects the current standard. For scheme renewals with NICEIC or NAPIT, you’ll need to demonstrate current knowledge — meaning the updated 2382-26 exam is the right route.

How long does it take from enrolment to having a certificate? Most candidates complete study within a few weeks, fitting it around work. Once you book your exam and pass, results come through typically the same day. It’s realistic to go from enrolment to certificate within a month.

Can I sit the exam from home? Yes. The home-based option is fully invigilated via webcam and runs every week. You’ll need a quiet room, a reliable internet connection, and a copy of your BS 7671 wiring regulations book.

Is the course suitable if I’m just starting out? The 18th Edition is designed for qualified electricians rather than beginners. If you hold an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent and are moving into your career, this is the right next step. The self-paced online format works well for those still building practical experience alongside their studies.
