Why Exeter Electricians Need This Qualification Right Now

Devon’s construction sector has been busy. Exeter has been at the centre of a sustained housing push — the Liveable Exeter programme is targeting thousands of new homes across the city and its surrounding districts, with large-scale greenfield and brownfield developments continuing to deliver new communities across Exeter, East Devon, Mid Devon and Teignbridge. For electricians working on new builds, rewires, commercial fit-outs and domestic installations across this patch, the 18th Edition is the foundation qualification — and Amendment 4, published in April 2026, is the version that counts now.

Electrical contractors across Devon — from Exeter to Exmouth, Tiverton to Totnes — are increasingly expected to demonstrate current knowledge as a condition of scheme membership. Both NICEIC and NAPIT require your 18th Edition to be current and up to date. If your existing certificate predates Amendment 4, it’s time to update.

The BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 standard — published and managed by the IET — covers the full range of electrical installation requirements for domestic, commercial and industrial work. Knowing it thoroughly isn’t just about passing an exam — it directly affects the quality and compliance of every job you sign off.

Who Typically Books This Course?

The electricians and contractors booking through MJ Electrical Training in the Exeter area tend to fall into a few clear groups:

  • Sole traders and self-employed electricians across Devon refreshing their 18th Edition ahead of scheme renewal with NICEIC or NAPIT
  • Contractors working on new-build developments around Exeter, Topsham, Newton Abbot and Exmouth who need current certification on file
  • Electrical firms bringing on qualified staff who need the 18th Edition as a baseline requirement
  • Inspection and testing engineers across the South West who need current regs knowledge before sitting the City & Guilds 2391-52
  • Apprentices and recently qualified electricians getting their first 18th Edition certificate under their belt

If any of those sound like you, the course is available to start right now.

Frequently Asked Questions — Exeter & Devon

Do I need to travel to sit the exam? No — you can sit the invigilated exam from home every week via webcam. If you prefer a centre, we have weekly exam sessions at Topsham Road in Exeter, with additional centres in Plymouth, Taunton and Bristol.

My 18th Edition certificate is a few years old — do I need to resit? If your certificate doesn’t cover Amendment 4 (published April 2026), you should update. Both NICEIC and NAPIT expect your 18th Edition knowledge to reflect the current standard.

Is this the most up-to-date version of the exam? Yes. The City & Guilds 2382-26 covers BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — the current and most up-to-date version of the wiring regulations. Make sure you are not booking or studying for the 2382-22, which relates to an older version of the standard.

How long does the course take? Most candidates complete the study in 30–40 hours. The course is self-paced and online, so you can fit it around jobs and site commitments.

What does the £288.00 include? Everything. The course fee and the exam fee are both included in the single price of £288.00 Inc VAT — there are no additional charges.
