Exam Centre in Glasgow
Glasgow candidates choosing a centre-based sitting have a conveniently located City & Guilds venue right in the city:
Queen St, Edinburgh EH2 1JE
Wait — for Glasgow specifically, the nearest centre is in Edinburgh, accessible by direct train from Glasgow Queen Street or Glasgow Central in under an hour. It’s a straightforward day trip for candidates across the Greater Glasgow area.
That said, the home-based exam is by far the most popular choice for Glasgow electricians — fully invigilated via webcam, available every week, results typically the same day, and no travel required at all. If you’re coming from Paisley, Clydebank, Hamilton or anywhere in the Clyde Valley, it’s usually the most practical option.
Why Glasgow Electricians Are Renewing Now
Glasgow is in the middle of one of its most significant periods of regeneration and construction in decades — and the demand for qualified electrical work across the city reflects that directly.
The Glasgow Waters masterplan along the River Clyde is now actively progressing on the ground. Infrastructure works at Yorkhill Quay — a £3.75 million enabling programme laying the groundwork for over 1,100 new homes, a hotel, leisure and commercial space on the north bank of the Clyde — started in early 2026. The Clyde Gateway project continues to bring mixed-use development and new homes to the East End. The Govan Graving Docks development received planning permission in Spring 2025 for 304 new homes. Unite Students has begun construction on a major 934-bed riverside development near Kingston Bridge. Across the city, major housebuilders and developers are active on multiple fronts — from commercial fit-outs in the city centre to large-scale residential schemes in surrounding towns.
Beyond new build, Glasgow City Council’s ongoing investment programme across public buildings, schools and infrastructure creates steady demand for electrical maintenance and installation work across the region. Glasgow has also set ambitious targets around EV charging infrastructure and solar PV on council-owned buildings — areas directly affected by the changes introduced in Amendment 4 of BS 7671.
For electricians working across any of this activity, current certification matters. Both NICEIC and NAPIT require up-to-date 18th Edition knowledge for approved contractor and competent person scheme membership. A certificate that pre-dates Amendment 4, published April 2026, no longer covers the current version of the standard — and scheme renewals will pick that up.
Who Typically Books From Glasgow and the Clyde Valley
The 2382-26 draws a broad mix of candidates from across the Glasgow city region:
- Self-employed electricians in Glasgow, Paisley and Clydebank keeping their qualifications current for domestic and commercial work
- Electrical contractors working on the Clyde waterfront regeneration schemes and new-build residential developments across Greater Glasgow
- Maintenance electricians on commercial and public sector contracts across the city — including NHS, schools, and local authority estates
- Sole traders renewing ahead of NICEIC or NAPIT scheme assessments
- Apprentices and recently qualified electricians sitting the 18th Edition as part of their professional development, including those registered with the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB)
If any of those descriptions fit your situation, the course is open and ready whenever you are.

Questions From Glasgow Candidates
Is there a City & Guilds exam centre in Glasgow itself? The nearest centre-based option for Glasgow candidates is in Edinburgh — around 50 minutes by direct train from Glasgow Queen Street. In practice, the majority of Glasgow candidates choose the home-based exam and avoid the journey entirely. It runs weekly, is fully invigilated via webcam, and results come through typically the same day.
Does Amendment 4 mean I need to resit if my certificate is already 18th Edition? Your certificate remains valid, but if it pre-dates Amendment 4 (April 2026) it no longer reflects the current BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 standard. For NICEIC and NAPIT scheme renewals, demonstrating knowledge of the updated standard is increasingly expected. The 2382-26 is the recognised route.
How long does it realistically take from enrolment to having a certificate? Most candidates complete the course material within a few weeks, fitting study around normal working hours. Results arrive typically the same day as the exam. Four to six weeks from enrolment to certificate is a realistic expectation for most people.
Is this qualification accepted under the SJIB framework in Scotland? The City & Guilds 2382-26 is the nationally recognised qualification for BS 7671 and is accepted as the standard across all sectors and competent person schemes throughout the UK, including Scotland. It is recognised by employers and contractors working under the SJIB framework.
Can I genuinely sit the exam from home without going into a centre? Yes — the home-based exam runs every week and is fully invigilated via webcam to exactly the same standard as a centre-based sitting. You’ll need a reliable internet connection, a webcam, a quiet room and your BS 7671 wiring regulations book.
