Fast Track Your 18th Edition Exam — City & Guilds 2382-26 for Experienced Electricians

If you already know your way around an installation, you don’t need a course to tell you how electricity works. What you need is the exam — and that’s exactly what MJ Electrical Training offers. Experienced electricians can sit the City & Guilds 2382-26 Amendment 4 examination directly, without enrolling on a full training course, saving both time and money while gaining the certification that matters.

The 2382-26 is the current and only valid 18th Edition qualification. Amendment 4 of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 was published in April 2026 — and whether you are renewing an older certificate, updating from a pre-Amendment 4 qualification, or sitting the 18th Edition for the first time, the 2382-26 exam is the destination. Skip the course. Sit the exam. Get certified.

Who Is the Exam-Only Route For?

This route is designed for electricians who already have the practical knowledge and trade experience — and simply need the paper to prove it. Candidates who typically book the exam-only option include:

  • Experienced electricians who have been working to BS 7671 for years and are confident in the current Wiring Regulations without needing a structured course to prepare
  • Electricians renewing or upgrading from an older 18th Edition certificate that pre-dates Amendment 4, who need the current 2382-26 qualification to satisfy their approved contractor scheme
  • Site electricians and contractors whose principal contractors or clients now require evidence of current Amendment 4 compliance as a condition of engagement
  • NICEIC or NAPIT registered contractors whose certification renewal requires a valid, up-to-date 18th Edition qualification reflecting the April 2026 amendment
  • Returning electricians who have been out of formal certification for a period and need to demonstrate current knowledge quickly and cost-effectively

Why the 2382-26 Exam — and Why Now?

Amendment 4 of BS 7671:2018 was published in April 2026. It is not optional — it is the current edition of the Wiring Regulations, and any electrician holding a certificate based on an earlier amendment is working with an out-of-date qualification. The 2382-26 examination is the City & Guilds assessment that tests knowledge of the current edition in full.

For experienced electricians, the content of Amendment 4 is not a mystery. You have been working to BS 7671 on real installations. The exam-only route acknowledges that — it lets you demonstrate your existing knowledge in a formal, certificated assessment without making you sit through training material you already know. The result is the same qualification, achieved faster and at lower cost.

Membership of NICEIC or NAPIT requires current, valid 18th Edition certification. Approved contractor status, competent person scheme membership, and increasingly the requirements of main contractors and principal designers on site all point to the same outcome — the 2382-26 certificate needs to be current. If yours isn’t, this is the most direct route to fixing that.

How the Exam Works

The City & Guilds 2382-26 is an open-book examination. You sit it with your copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — the new orange book — in front of you throughout. The exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and runs for two hours. Results are typically available the same day.

You have two options for how and where you sit it:

Home-Based — Available Every Week Sit the exam from your own home or office, webcam invigilated, with weekly availability. No travel, no time off site beyond the exam itself. You need a computer or laptop with a webcam and a stable internet connection, plus your copy of the orange book.

Centre-Based — Locations Across the UK If you prefer a supervised exam environment, MJ Electrical Training has centre-based exam locations across the UK. Visit our national page for current centre locations and available dates.

The One Thing You Do Need — The Orange Book

The 2382-26 is an open-book exam, which means you must have a copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 with you when you sit it. This is the updated edition incorporating Amendment 4 — the new orange book. Older editions of BS 7671 are not valid for this examination. If you do not already have a copy, order it before you book your exam date so you have time to familiarise yourself with the layout and tabbed structure before you sit. The book is available directly from the IET and from electrical wholesalers across the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really sit the exam without doing the course?

Yes. The course and the exam are separate options. If you are an experienced electrician who is confident in the content of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, you can book the exam directly without enrolling on the full training course. This saves you both time and money, while delivering the same City & Guilds 2382-26 certificate at the end of it.

What if I want some preparation material before I sit?

If you want to refresh your knowledge of Amendment 4 before sitting — particularly the changes introduced in the April 2026 update — the full online course is available and entirely self-paced. You can work through as much or as little as you need before booking your exam. Most experienced candidates who do choose to use the course material focus their preparation on the Amendment 4 changes rather than working through the full content from scratch.

How quickly can I get the exam booked?

The home-based option runs weekly, so there is rarely a significant wait once you are ready to sit. Centre-based dates are also available at locations across the UK. Check current availability on our national page.
