The 18th edition IET wiring regulations were released in July 2018, and from 1st January 2019, the design of new electrical installations have been required to comply with this latest version of the regulations.

The 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations refers to the 18th edition of the British Standard BS 7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations. It is a comprehensive set of regulations that guides the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems up to 1000 volts AC. The regulations are published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and are commonly known as the 18th edition wiring Regs.

The current version is Amendment 2: 2022 – Brown publication. Buy the latest 18th edition book here.

Amendment 3 (2024), the free PDF ‘bolt-on’ to Amendment 2 (2022), the ‘brown book,’ has been published and is now available to download from the IET website.
You will now need both the ‘brown book’ and the free PDF to be up to date with BS 7671, both of which are valid until at least 2026.
Download the Amendment 3 of BS761 here from the IETs website. >>>

Why is the 18th edition important to Electricians, associated trades, trainees and newcomers?

Safety: The primary purpose of the regulations is to ensure the safety of people and property. Electrical systems can pose significant risks if not designed and installed correctly. The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations aim to minimize the likelihood of electrical shock, fire, and other hazards by providing strict guidelines for electrical installations.

Compliance: Adhering to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom. Compliance with these regulations is necessary to meet the standards set by the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, which places a legal duty on employers, employees, and self-employed individuals to ensure electrical safety in the workplace.

Technical Advances: The regulations are regularly updated to keep pace with technological advancements and industry best practices. The 18th Edition incorporates changes and updates based on new research, developments in electrical engineering, and lessons learned from past incidents. It ensures that electrical installations are up to date and reflects the latest safety standards.

Competence and Certification: The regulations emphasise the importance of competency in electrical installations. They require electricians and professionals involved in designing, installing, inspecting, and maintaining electrical systems to possess the necessary knowledge and skills. Compliance with the regulations assures qualified individuals are involved in electrical work, reducing the risk of mistakes and unsafe installations.

Consumer Protection: The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations prioritise the safety and protection of consumers. They provide guidelines for electrical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial settings, ensuring that consumers are safeguarded against electrical hazards. Compliance with the regulations offers peace of mind to consumers and protects them from substandard and unsafe electrical work.

Liability and competence: Compliance with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations is often a prerequisite to many areas within the industry and could include the following.

  • Obtaining insurance to work on electrical installations.
  • Joining government-backed competent person schemes like the NICEIC or NAPIT.
  • Applying or renewing JIB Gold Cards.
  • Demonstrating continued professional development to prospective employers.
  • It is often the prerequisite to taking further electrical qualifications like the 2391 inspection and testing.

The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations are crucial in ensuring electrical safety, promoting best practices, and maintaining standards. They guide electricians and persons working in the industry, protect consumers, and help prevent accidents, fires, and other hazards associated with electrical installations. Compliance with these regulations is essential to meet legal requirements, maintain safety standards, and demonstrate professional competence.
