Advance Your Electrical Career in Cardiff with the 2391-52 Inspection & Testing Course

If you are an experienced electrician in the Cardiff area, adding inspection and testing to your qualifications is one of the best ways to enhance your career. It can increase your earning potential, expand the type of work you can take on, and help build your reputation as a competent electrical professional.

One of the most recognised qualifications in this area is the City & Guilds 2391-52 Level 3 Award in Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations.

At MJ Electrical Training, we offer a flexible online learning route for electricians across Cardiff, South Wales and the surrounding areas. The course is delivered through online e-learning, allowing you to study at your own pace, in your own time, without needing to attend repeated classroom sessions.

Please note that the 2391-52 final exams are now only available at our approved exam centres in Manchester or West London. The course itself is completed online, but candidates must travel to one of these centres to complete the final assessment requirements.

Whether you are self-employed, working for a contractor, involved in maintenance, or aiming to offer EICRs, this course gives you the knowledge and qualification route needed to support inspection and testing work in line with current industry expectations.

What the 2391-52 Qualification Covers

The City & Guilds 2391-52 combines both initial verification and periodic inspection and testing into one recognised qualification. It replaced the older separate 2394 and 2395 qualifications, bringing the key inspection and testing elements together into a single award.

The qualification is designed for electricians who already have electrical knowledge and experience and want to formalise their inspection and testing skills with a recognised City & Guilds certificate.

The course covers areas such as inspection and testing of new and existing electrical installations, verification procedures before energising, periodic inspection for safety and compliance, legal requirements, BS 7671, Guidance Note 3, test documentation, Electrical Installation Certificates, Electrical Installation Condition Reports and test result schedules.

From safe isolation through to interpreting test results, the course content reflects the type of knowledge electricians need when carrying out inspection and testing work professionally.

Study Online and Learn at Your Own Pace

The 2391-52 course is delivered through self-paced online e-learning, giving candidates the flexibility to study when and where it suits them. There are no fixed classroom dates for the learning element, so you can work through the course material around your job, family life and other commitments.

This is ideal for busy electricians in Cardiff, Newport, Pontypridd, Bridgend, Barry, Caerphilly, Penarth, the Valleys and wider South Wales who may not be able to attend regular classroom sessions.

With MJ Electrical Training, you can study at your own pace and revisit the course material as often as needed. This helps you build confidence before attending the final assessments.

The online learning route is particularly useful for candidates who already have industry experience and want a flexible way to prepare for the City & Guilds 2391-52 qualification.

Final Exams in Manchester or West London

Although the course is completed online, the final assessments must be completed in person.

MJ Electrical Training now only offers the 2391-52 final exams in Manchester or West London. We no longer offer the final 2391-52 assessments in Bristol.

This means Cardiff and South Wales candidates should plan ahead and be prepared to travel to either Manchester or West London for the final assessment stage.

While this does involve travel, the benefit is that you can complete all of your preparation online before attending the exam centre. This reduces the amount of time you need to spend away from work compared with traditional classroom-based training.

The Assessment Process

To gain the full City & Guilds 2391-52 qualification, candidates need to complete the required assessment elements. These include the theory exam and practical assessment.

The theory exam is a computer-based assessment designed to test your understanding of inspection and testing principles, procedures, documentation and relevant regulations. Candidates should be familiar with BS 7671 and Guidance Note 3 before attempting the exam.

The practical assessment is designed to check that you can apply inspection and testing procedures safely and competently. This may include safe isolation, continuity testing, insulation resistance testing, RCD testing, correct use of test instruments and completion of associated documentation.

The assessment process is intended to reflect the knowledge and competence expected of electricians carrying out inspection and testing work in real environments.

Is This Course Right for You?

The 2391-52 is aimed at experienced electricians who want to formalise or improve their inspection and testing knowledge. It is not designed for complete beginners or new entrants to the electrical industry.

This course may be suitable if you already work in domestic, commercial or industrial electrical environments, need to issue or understand EICRs, want to offer inspection and testing services, work in maintenance or facilities management, or want to strengthen your CV with a recognised City & Guilds inspection and testing qualification.

Candidates should already have suitable electrical experience and be comfortable with electrical installations, test instruments, circuit arrangements and the principles of safe working.

If you are still new to the electrical industry, you may be better suited to earlier qualifications first, such as the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations or Building Regulations Part P, depending on your goals.

Why Inspection and Testing Matters

Inspection and testing is a key skill area for electricians who want to progress beyond installation work. It requires technical knowledge, attention to detail, confidence with test equipment and the ability to complete accurate certification.

Landlords, businesses, domestic clients, facilities managers and contractors all rely on competent inspection and testing to confirm whether electrical installations are safe for continued use.

For electricians in Cardiff and South Wales, the 2391-52 can support progression into EICR work, compliance testing, maintenance contracts, facilities work, landlord reports and more advanced electrical roles.

Why Choose MJ Electrical Training?

MJ Electrical Training focuses on flexible and practical training for working electricians. Our online e-learning route allows you to study at your own pace without committing to repeated classroom attendance.

This makes the course a practical option for candidates who want flexible preparation but are willing to travel for the final City & Guilds assessment.
