18th Edition Wiring Regulations in Kent — BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 | City & Guilds 2382-26
Kent is one of the most active counties in England for electrical work right now — and if you’re based in Maidstone, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Ashford, Sittingbourne, Faversham, Medway, Chatham or anywhere across the Garden of England, the pressure to hold a current 18th Edition qualification has never been higher. Amendment 4 to BS 7671 was published in April 2026, and the City & Guilds 2382-26 exam — the qualification that reflects it — is what employers, approved contractor schemes and competent person bodies across Kent are now expecting.
MJ Electrical Training delivers the complete course and exam online, fully self-paced, for £288.00 Inc VAT. No classroom sessions. No waiting for a cohort to start. Study around your jobs and sit the exam when you’re ready.

Why Kent Electricians Are Updating Now
Kent consistently punches above its weight in construction activity. According to Kent County Council data, 18.3% of all enterprises in the county operate in the construction sector — significantly ahead of both the South East average and the England average — and there were 44,000 construction jobs in Kent in 2023 alone. For electricians, that translates directly into sustained demand, but also into sustained scrutiny of qualifications.
Residential new build is the dominant driver in 2025 and 2026. Maidstone Borough Council is currently working to a target of 1,400 new homes per year, with major developments underway including Monchelsea Park and Rosewood in Maidstone itself, alongside dozens of smaller sites across the borough. First and second fix electricians on these sites are routinely required to hold a current 18th Edition qualification as a baseline condition of working.
London overspill and relocation demand adds further pressure. Kent continues to attract significant numbers of Londoners relocating out of the capital — Maidstone receives around 45% of its inward migration from London according to ONS data — which feeds a steady pipeline of residential refurbishment, rewire and extension work across the county. Every domestic installer and self-employed electrician working in this market needs their compliance credentials to be current.
Commercial and industrial maintenance across Maidstone’s business parks, the Medway towns, Ashford’s logistics corridors and the county’s growing retail and hospitality estates all specify BS 7671 compliance as standard. Facilities management contracts across Kent consistently require engineers to hold the current wiring regulations qualification.
For any Kent electrician registered with NICEIC or NAPIT, holding the current 2382-26 covering Amendment 4 is essential to maintaining your approved contractor or competent person status. This applies whether you’re based in Maidstone, Tonbridge, Sittingbourne or anywhere else across the county.
Your Nearest Exam Centres
The City & Guilds 2382-26 exam can be taken weekly from home via webcam invigilation, or in person at a local centre. Kent candidates have two well-positioned centre options:
Maidstone — King Street, ME14 1BS Right in the heart of Kent’s county town. King Street, Maidstone is centrally located and easily accessible from across the county — Tonbridge is approximately 15 miles via the A26, Sittingbourne around 12 miles via the A249, and Ashford around 20 miles via the M20. Maidstone East and Maidstone West stations are both within easy walking distance for candidates travelling by rail from Medway, Tonbridge or Ashford. Town centre parking is available at several nearby multi-storeys.
Bromley — Market Square, BR1 1NA Bromley town centre is the natural choice for Kent candidates in the north-west of the county — particularly those based in Sevenoaks, Swanley, Orpington or the Dartford area. Orpington is approximately 5 miles from Bromley, Sevenoaks around 14 miles via the A21, and Dartford around 15 miles via the A20 and A224. Bromley South station is a short walk from Market Square, with direct trains from Sevenoaks, Orpington and connections via London Bridge from across North Kent. Parking is available at the Bromley town centre multi-storeys.
For most candidates, the home exam remains the simplest option — taken weekly at a time that suits you, with results typically available the same day. No travel, no time off site.
Who Books From Kent?
The candidates booking the 18th Edition course from across Kent typically include:
- Domestic installers and self-employed electricians working across the county’s active residential market — rewires, extensions, new builds and EV charger installations — who need their NICEIC or NAPIT registration to reflect the current standard
- First and second fix electricians working on the major new build housing developments around Maidstone, Medway and Ashford, where site inductions increasingly require proof of current wiring regulations compliance
- Maintenance engineers working across Kent’s commercial and industrial estates, where BS 7671 is a baseline contract requirement
- North Kent and Dartford corridor electricians who work across the London–Kent boundary and need qualifications that satisfy both London and South East employers
- Electricians updating from an earlier version — particularly those who hold the previous 2382-22 qualification and need to demonstrate coverage of Amendment 4 to their scheme or employer
The Amendment 4 Update — What Kent Electricians Need to Know
BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 was published in April 2026. It is the current, legally relevant version of the IET Wiring Regulations, and the City & Guilds 2382-26 exam is written to this standard.
If you hold the previous 2382-22 qualification, that was awarded under an earlier amendment. Some employers will continue to accept it — but for electricians on NICEIC or NAPIT competent person schemes, or working for contractors with rigorous compliance frameworks, the 2382-26 covering Amendment 4 is the cleaner position to be in.
The exam uses the BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 orange book in open-book format. You’re permitted to use it throughout, but the exam is timed — and candidates who know exactly where to find key regulations consistently outperform those who don’t. The MJ Electrical Training course builds that navigation skill throughout, so you arrive at the exam prepared.
