The 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations were first released in July 2018, and from 1st January 2019 all new electrical installations in the UK have been required to comply with this version of the standard. Since then, the regulations have been updated through a series of amendments — the most recent being Amendment 4:2026, published in April 2026.
MJ Electrical Training delivers the City & Guilds 2382-26 examination — the current qualification covering BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — entirely online, with weekly exam sittings across 38 UK centres and from home. Whether you’re searching for an 18th Edition course near you or simply need to sit the exam, you’ll find everything you need here.
What Is the 18th Edition?
The 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations refers to the 18th edition of the British Standard BS 7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations. It is a comprehensive set of regulations governing the design, installation and maintenance of electrical systems up to 1000 volts AC. The regulations are published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and are universally known across the industry as the 18th Edition Wiring Regs.
The current version is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — the orange book incorporating Amendment 4, published April 2026. This is the version required for the City & Guilds 2382-26 examination. Candidates sitting the exam must use this edition during the open-book paper. Earlier versions of the book are not suitable for use in the current exam.
Why Is the 18th Edition Critical?
The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations are the foundation of electrical safety practice in the UK. For electricians, associated trades, trainees and anyone entering the industry, holding a current qualification is not simply advisable — it is a professional and often legal necessity.
Safety
The regulations’ primary purpose is to ensure the safety of people and property. Electrical systems present significant risks when not designed and installed correctly. BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 minimises the likelihood of electric shock, fire and other hazards by providing strict, detailed requirements for all aspects of electrical installation work.
Compliance
Adherence to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom. Compliance is necessary to meet the standards set by the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, which places a legal duty on employers, employees and self-employed individuals to ensure electrical safety in the workplace.
Technical Advances
The regulations are regularly updated to keep pace with technological change and industry best practice. Amendment 4:2026 incorporates the latest developments in electrical engineering — including updates to prosumer installations, EV charging infrastructure and energy storage systems — ensuring that electrical professionals are working to a standard that reflects current technology and current risk.
Competence and Certification
The regulations place a clear emphasis on competence. They require electricians and professionals involved in the design, installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical systems to possess the necessary knowledge and skills. Holding a current City & Guilds 2382-26 certificate demonstrates exactly that to employers, clients and approving bodies.
Consumer Protection
BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 provides guidelines for electrical installations across residential, commercial and industrial settings, ensuring consumers are protected against electrical hazards. Compliance offers confidence to consumers and protects them from substandard or unsafe electrical work.
Liability, Compliance and Career Progression
Holding a current 18th Edition qualification is a prerequisite across many areas of the industry, including:
- Obtaining professional indemnity and public liability insurance to work on electrical installations
- Joining government-backed competent person schemes such as NICEIC or NAPIT
- Applying for or renewing a JIB ECS Gold Card
- Demonstrating continued professional development to prospective employers and principal contractors
- Progressing to further electrical qualifications including the City & Guilds 2391-52 Inspection & Testing
Amendment 4:2026 is now in force. If your existing certificate pre-dates April 2026, it no longer reflects the current version of BS 7671. Both NICEIC and NAPIT are asking approved contractors to demonstrate current Amendment 4 competence at assessment — and the 2382-26 is the recognised route to achieving that.
