18th Edition Wiring Regulations in Scotland — Edinburgh, Glasgow & Aberdeen | City & Guilds 2382-26
From the energy transition projects reshaping the North East to the waterfront and city centre regeneration transforming Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland’s electrical sector is busier than it has been in years. Wherever you’re based — Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, or anywhere across the Central Belt and North East — MJ Electrical Training delivers the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification entirely online, with flexible exam options including a dedicated centre in Edinburgh and weekly home-based sittings available right across Scotland.
Why the 18th Edition Matters Across Scotland
The current UK standard for electrical installation work is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, and the qualification that demonstrates competency against it is the City & Guilds 2382-26. Amendment 4 was published in April 2026 and is the version examined in all current sittings. If your certificate carries the older 2382-22 qualification number, your knowledge of BS 7671 is now out of date.
For electricians working across Scotland’s construction, energy and domestic sectors, current certification underpins membership of NICEIC and NAPIT competent person schemes, and is a requirement most approved contractor schemes expect to see kept up to date.

What’s Driving Demand Across Scotland
Edinburgh is in the middle of one of the most significant waterfront regeneration programmes in the UK. The £1.3 billion Granton Waterfront project on the city’s northern coastline is well underway, with 75 net-zero-ready homes already occupied at Granton Station View, 444 homes nearly fully let at Western Villages, and a further 143 homes due for completion at Silverlea in summer 2026. The restored Granton Gasholder, now Gasholder 1 Park, has become a landmark feature of the scheme. Beyond Granton, the city’s 2026 development pipeline includes dozens of housing-led regeneration projects, the next phase of the Powderhall regeneration, the £1 billion Elements Edinburgh development near the airport, and significant business park and commercial expansion across West Edinburgh.
Glasgow is similarly mid-transformation, anchored by the Glasgow Waters masterplan along the River Clyde. Enabling works at Yorkhill Quay began in early 2026, laying the groundwork for over 1,100 new homes alongside hotel, leisure and commercial space. The Clyde Gateway continues to deliver mixed-use development across the East End, the Govan Graving Docks scheme secured planning permission for 304 new homes in 2025, and a major 934-bed riverside student development is under construction near Kingston Bridge. Glasgow’s new Health Innovation Hub, a purpose-built life science facility, adds a further dimension to the city’s commercial construction pipeline.
Aberdeen is at the centre of Scotland’s energy transition, anchored by the £420 million Aberdeen South Harbour expansion and the adjacent Energy Transition Zone — a 250-hectare site designed to become the largest dedicated energy transition complex in Scotland. ETZ EnergyWorks, backed by ETZ Ltd, bp and Scottish Enterprise, became operational in 2025 as a manufacturing and innovation hub for companies working in offshore wind, hydrogen and battery storage. Aberdeen has also secured the headquarters for Green Volt, set to be the world’s largest floating windfarm, and almost 17GW of floating wind projects are now within range of the city — accounting for the majority of all such projects in Scottish waters. For electrical contractors and engineers, this scale of energy infrastructure investment is generating substantial long-term demand.
Across all three cities, NICEIC and NAPIT competent person scheme membership remains the expected baseline for commercial and domestic electrical work, and a current 18th Edition certificate is fundamental to that.
Exam Options Across Scotland
Edinburgh — Basement, 4 Queen St, EH2 1JE
MJ Electrical Training’s Scotland exam centre is located in Edinburgh city centre, with weekly sittings available. Queen Street is within easy walking distance of Edinburgh Waverley and Edinburgh Haymarket stations, with onward connections across the Central Belt, Fife and the Borders. For candidates driving in, the New Town area offers a range of parking options within walking distance of the venue.
Glasgow candidates
Glasgow does not currently have its own dedicated exam centre, but Edinburgh is a straightforward day trip — direct trains from Glasgow Queen Street or Glasgow Central reach Edinburgh Waverley in under an hour, making it a practical option for a centre-based sitting. For most Glasgow-based electricians, however, the home-based webcam-invigilated exam tends to be the more convenient choice, particularly for candidates across Paisley, Clydebank, Hamilton and the wider Clyde Valley.
Aberdeen and the North East
There is currently no dedicated exam centre in Aberdeen, so the home-based exam is the natural choice for most candidates across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and the North East. It’s fully webcam-invigilated, available every week, with results typically issued the same day — meaning there’s no need to travel south for a centre-based sitting unless you’d prefer to.
The home-based exam is available weekly to all Scottish candidates, with no travel required at all — sit it from home or your workplace at a time that fits your schedule. This is included in the standard £288.00 Inc VAT price with no additional cost, and is currently the most popular route for candidates outside Edinburgh.
Who Books From Scotland?
The typical candidate booking from across Scotland spans several groups:
- Site electricians working on Edinburgh’s Granton Waterfront and West Edinburgh schemes, or Glasgow’s Clyde-side regeneration projects including Yorkhill Quay, Clyde Gateway and Govan Graving Docks
- Energy sector electrical engineers and technicians working across Aberdeen’s Energy Transition Zone, the Port of Aberdeen, and the wider offshore wind, hydrogen and renewables supply chain
- Domestic and commercial installers running sole-trader or small-business operations across the Central Belt and North East Scotland, working towards or maintaining NICEIC or NAPIT competent person scheme registration
- Maintenance electricians working across Scotland’s expanding student accommodation, life science and commercial development pipeline
- Electricians updating from the 17th Edition or the old 2382-22 certificate, looking to align with the current 2382-26 standard against BS 7671:2018+A4:2026
- Apprentices approaching completion who need the 18th Edition alongside their NVQ Level 3 to complete their qualification pathway
The online, self-paced format suits this audience particularly well given Scotland’s geography. Most candidates are working full-time on site or running their own businesses, and being able to study evenings and weekends, then sit the exam from home or at the Edinburgh centre, means the qualification fits around work rather than the other way round.
How to Enrol
The course is delivered entirely online through MJ Electrical Training’s learning platform. Study is self-paced across an estimated 30–40 hours, with immediate access from enrolment. Everything is included in the single price of £288.00 Inc VAT — course access and the City & Guilds 2382-26 examination, with no additional charges.
When you’re ready to sit, choose the home-based webcam-invigilated exam (available weekly, no travel required, and the most popular option for candidates across Scotland) or the centre-based sitting in Edinburgh. Results are typically issued on the same day.
You will need a copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — the new orange book — for use in the open-book exam. Full details of how to obtain it are available from the IET.

Frequently Asked Questions — Scotland
I’m based in Glasgow or Aberdeen — do I need to travel to Edinburgh to sit the exam?
Not necessarily. The home-based, webcam-invigilated exam is available weekly across the whole of Scotland and requires no travel at all. It’s currently the most popular route for candidates outside Edinburgh. If you’d prefer a centre-based sitting, Edinburgh is the only dedicated exam centre in Scotland, and is reachable from Glasgow by direct train in under an hour. Both options are included in the standard £288.00 Inc VAT price.
Does working in Aberdeen’s energy and renewables sector require a specific version of the 18th Edition?
All UK electrical installation and maintenance work is governed by BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, and the current qualification demonstrating competency against it is the City & Guilds 2382-26. Amendment 4 came into force in April 2026. With substantial investment now underway at the Energy Transition Zone, Aberdeen South Harbour and across Scotland’s offshore wind supply chain, principal contractors and energy companies will expect to see current certification. Electricians holding the older 2382-22 will need to update before their next scheme renewal or contract submission.
Can I complete the course without taking time off work?
Yes — the course is fully self-paced and available 24 hours a day online, with no live sessions or classroom attendance required. Most candidates across Scotland complete the study material in evenings and weekends, then book either the home-based exam or a sitting at the Edinburgh centre on a day that suits them.
