City & Guilds Inspection & testing in Exeter

If you’re an experienced electrician in the Exeter area, adding inspection and testing to your qualifications is one of the smartest ways to advance your career. It increases your earning potential, opens up new job opportunities, and builds your professional credibility. One of the most respected qualifications in this field is the City & Guilds 2391-52 Level 3 Award in Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations.

At MJ Electrical Training, we make it easy and affordable for electricians across Devon and the South West to gain this sought-after qualification. Our flexible e-learning course is priced at just £234.00, with final exams available at our approved centre in Exeter, as well as Bristol, West London, and Manchester.

Whether you’re self-employed, working for a local contractor, or preparing for EICR-based work, this course provides the technical knowledge and legal competence needed to carry out inspections and issue documentation in line with the latest standards.

What the 2391-52 Qualification Covers

The 2391-52 combines two formerly separate qualifications — the 2394 for Initial Verification and the 2395 for Periodic Inspection & Testing — into one comprehensive award. It’s aimed at electricians who already hold a Level 3 electrotechnical qualification and want to expand their skillset in a practical, recognised way.

The course covers inspection and testing procedures for both new and existing installations. You’ll learn how to test new systems before they are energised and how to carry out periodic inspections on existing installations to check ongoing safety and compliance. You’ll also develop your understanding of statutory and non-statutory regulations including BS 7671, Guidance Note 3, and the Electricity at Work Regulations — along with the proper documentation such as EICs, EICRs, and schedules of test results.

From safe isolation through to test result interpretation, the course content is designed to reflect the real tasks electricians face every day, helping you operate more confidently and competently on-site.

Study Online – Learn When It Works for You

The 2391-52 course is delivered entirely through online self-paced learning, giving you the flexibility to study around your work or personal commitments. You can enrol at any time and begin learning immediately, with no fixed dates or deadlines. This model is particularly useful for tradespeople across Exeter and Devon who may not be able to commit to fixed in-person classroom sessions.

You’ll have access to engaging digital resources including video tutorials, worked examples, practice questions, and downloadable documents. Our tutor support ensures you’re not on your own — help is available throughout to guide you through challenging topics or offer advice when you’re ready to sit your assessments.

Whether you’re based in Exeter, Torquay, Newton Abbot, or further afield in Devon or Cornwall, this flexible format means you can complete all your learning from home — with just one trip into Exeter for the final assessments.

The Assessment Process – What to Expect

To achieve the full qualification, you’ll need to complete two assessments: a multiple-choice theory exam and a hands-on practical test. Both are completed in person at an approved centre, with Exeter being the most convenient option for South West-based candidates.

The theory exam (Unit 052) is a computer-based, open-book test that lasts 120 minutes and consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. You’ll need a score of approximately 75% to pass. You’ll be allowed to refer to BS 7671 (18th Edition) and IET Guidance Note 3 during the test — just as you would in a real-world job scenario. This exam tests your understanding of inspection processes, safety requirements, reporting procedures, and test result interpretation.

The practical assessment (Unit 502) is completed at our Exeter centre under invigilated conditions. You’ll need to demonstrate safe isolation techniques, perform a full sequence of electrical tests (continuity, insulation resistance, RCDs, etc.), and complete accompanying certification accurately. This hands-on component is designed to mirror real-life inspection scenarios and is essential for proving your competence to employers, clients, and regulatory bodies.

Who Is the 2391-52 Course Designed For?

This course is intended for electricians who already have practical experience and want to either formalise their skills or meet industry requirements to carry out inspection and testing legally. If you’re working in domestic, commercial or industrial settings and regularly carry out work that requires certification or EICRs, the 2391-52 is the right route for you.

It’s not suitable for those who are new to the industry or don’t yet have a Level 3 qualification. You should already feel confident using test instruments and reading circuit diagrams. If you’re a sole trader in Exeter looking to expand your services, or a team member preparing to take on more responsibility, this qualification is a valuable step forward.
