Why Availability Matters More Than You Might Think
For electricians working to a deadline, exam availability is often more important than course content — not because the content doesn’t matter, but because a course that’s ready when you are is worth far more than one with a two-week wait baked in.
Consider the situations that typically bring someone to search for “next available 18th Edition course”:
Scheme renewal deadlines. NICEIC and NAPIT membership requires current 18th Edition certification. If your renewal window is approaching and your certification has lapsed or is about to, you need a course that starts now and an exam that runs this week — not one that runs on the first Tuesday of next month.
New contract requirements. Principal contractors on larger sites increasingly require BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 certification as a condition of site access. If you’ve been offered a contract that starts in a fortnight, a monthly exam schedule leaves you with no margin.
Amendment 4:2026 updates. With Amendment 4 published in April 2026, electricians who qualified under an earlier version of the standard are being asked to demonstrate knowledge of the updated regulations. The need to update quickly is real.
Job applications and tenders. Current 18th Edition certification appears on more job specifications and tender documents than ever. When an opportunity comes up, the ability to point to an in-progress or recently completed qualification can be the difference between being considered and being ruled out.
How the Online Course Works
The MJ Electrical Training course is built around the reality of how working electricians actually study — in short sessions, at irregular times, around a full working week.
The platform is available at any time. There are no live sessions to attend, no video calls to join at a set hour, and no classroom days built into the programme. You work through the material at your own pace, returning to sections as needed and moving forward when you’re confident.
The estimated study time is 30–40 hours. How you spread that is entirely up to you. Some candidates work through it across four or five weeks of evening study. Others, particularly those with a deadline pressing, complete it in a more concentrated burst over two weeks. The course doesn’t dictate the pace — you do.
The content is fully updated for BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, covering the current regulations including Amendment 4. Because the 2382-26 exam is open-book, the course focuses on how to navigate BS 7671 quickly and accurately rather than on rote learning of regulation numbers — which is where exam marks are actually won and lost.
MJ Electrical Training is a City & Guilds Approved Centre. Your exam registration is handled directly, without a third party in the chain.
The Exam — Weekly Sittings, Home or Centre
The City & Guilds 2382-26 exam is open-book: two hours, 60 multiple-choice questions, and you’re permitted to use your copy of BS 7671 throughout. Results are typically available the same day.
Home webcam exam
Available weekly. You sit from home — or any quiet, private space with a reliable internet connection. An invigilator monitors the session remotely. You’ll need your copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — the current orange book — to hand. Full technical requirements and setup instructions are provided on booking confirmation.
The home sitting delivers the same City & Guilds 2382-26 certificate as the centre-based option. Same qualification, same awarding body, same result on your record.
Centre-based exam
Also available weekly at locations across the UK. In the North: Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool and Middlesbrough. In the Midlands: Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Cambridge and Norwich. Across the South: London, Guildford, Bromley, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth, among others. In Scotland: Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. In Wales: Cardiff and Swansea.
Full venue addresses, parking details and joining instructions are provided on booking confirmation.
What You Need Before You Start
Getting on the course is straightforward, but there are a couple of things worth having in place before or shortly after booking.
BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 — the orange book.
This is the IET Wiring Regulations publication and your permitted reference in the exam. You’ll need it to study effectively and to sit the assessment. If you don’t already have a copy, order it as soon as you book the course — delivery times vary and you don’t want it to become the thing holding you back.
A device and a reliable internet connection.
The course is browser-based. Any modern laptop, desktop or tablet will work. No software installation is required.
A quiet space for the home exam (if applicable).
If you’re planning to sit the home webcam option, you’ll need a room where you won’t be interrupted for two hours. Technical requirements are confirmed at the time of booking.
That’s it. No prior qualifications are required to enrol. The course is open to first-time candidates and renewal candidates alike.
Who Typically Needs the Next Available Course
The candidates who come to MJ Electrical Training with availability as their primary concern tend to fall into recognisable groups:
- Electricians whose certification has lapsed and who need to renew before a scheme assessment or site visit
- Newly qualified electricians who need the 2382-26 alongside their core qualifications before starting employment
- Maintenance engineers and facilities staff whose employer has set a certification deadline as part of a compliance review
- Sole traders and contractors who’ve picked up a contract requiring current BS 7671 knowledge and need to move quickly
- Apprentices in the final stages of their training who need to add the 18th Edition to their qualification portfolio
If an ECS Card, CSCS Card or SHEA Power Card is also on your list, those are available through our sister company MJ Training Solutions — weekly online sessions via MS Teams, no waiting for a course date.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can I start the 18th Edition course after booking?
Access is provided immediately on booking. There’s no waiting period, no start date, and no intake process. You can begin studying the same day you pay.
How soon can I sit the City & Guilds 2382-26 exam?
Exams run weekly. Once you feel ready, you book a sitting — home webcam or centre-based — at the next available weekly slot. Most candidates study for two to four weeks before booking their exam, though this varies depending on prior experience with BS 7671 and the time available to study each week.
Do I need to book the exam separately from the course?
No. The exam registration is included in the £288.00 Inc VAT course price. When you’re ready to sit, you contact MJ Electrical Training to book your slot — there’s no separate payment required and no external booking process to navigate.
What if I need to sit the exam urgently — is there any way to expedite?
Weekly sittings are the standard schedule. The home webcam option is often the most flexible route for urgent cases, as it removes the need to travel to a centre and offers more scheduling flexibility. Contact MJ Electrical Training directly if you have a specific deadline and we’ll advise on the nearest available slot.
Is the course valid immediately after I pass?
Yes. Results are typically available the same day as the exam. Your City & Guilds certificate follows in due course, but your pass result is on record with the awarding body from the day you sit. For scheme renewals or employer requirements, this is generally sufficient while the certificate is in production.
