Clearing the Confusion

18th Edition Amendment 4 vs. the 19th Edition Wiring Regulations

18th Edition Amendment 4 or 19th Edition Wiring Regulations? Here’s What You Need to Know

In the electrical industry, keeping up with the latest regulations is an important part of working safely and professionally. Lately, we’ve noticed a few questions (and some confusion) around when the 19th Edition Wiring Regulations might be released, and how it relates to the upcoming Amendment 4 to the 18th Edition.

So, we’ve put together this post to clear things up and help you stay informed without the noise.

Is the 19th Edition Coming Soon?

Let’s start with the big question: no, the 19th Edition hasn’t been announced yet.

There’s currently no confirmed release date for a new edition of the Wiring Regulations, and nothing from the IET to suggest that it’s just around the corner. If you’ve seen websites or forums claiming that the 19th Edition is coming in 2025, that information simply isn’t accurate.

The next update we’re expecting is actually Amendment 4 to the 18th Edition, not a brand-new edition.

So What About Amendment 4?

Amendment 4 is already in draft and is expected to be published in 2026. It’s part of a regular update cycle to keep the UK’s regulations aligned with European harmonised standards.

The planned changes will likely cover areas that are becoming more relevant every day, including:

Stationary secondary batteries, like home energy storage systems

Low voltage generating sets, such as backup generators

Power over Ethernet (PoE) – increasingly common in smart homes and offices

Energy efficiency guidance to help reduce waste and improve performance

Functional earthing and equipotential bonding for ICT and communication systems

These topics reflect the direction the industry is heading—more energy-conscious, more tech-driven, and more interconnected.

Should You Hold Off on Your 18th Edition Course?

We understand why some learners are thinking about waiting. But honestly, there’s no need to delay your training.

Here’s why:

The 19th Edition isn’t coming any time soon, and will follow Amendment 4—so we’re still a few years away.

You’re not required to requalify for every amendment, but it’s good practice to stay familiar with the changes.

•Holding your 18th Edition (Amendment 2) certificate keeps you up to date right now and gives you a solid foundation when future changes do come along.

•The current regulations are still very much in use across all sectors, and employers expect electricians to be working to the latest published standard.

If you’re working in the trade or looking to get started, getting qualified sooner means you’re ready for opportunities as they come up.

A Quick Note on Misinformation

Some websites are suggesting that the 19th Edition is on the horizon for 2025, but this isn’t backed by the IET or BSI. For anything to do with Wiring Regs, it’s always best to check the official sources—or feel free to reach out to us if you’re unsure. We’re happy to help.
