City & Guilds Inspection & testing in Plymouth

Advance Your Electrical Career in Plymouth with the 2391-52 Inspection & Testing Course

If you’re an experienced electrician in the Plymouth area, adding inspection and testing to your qualifications is one of the smartest moves you can make. It increases your earning potential, opens up new job opportunities, and enhances your professional credibility. One of the most recognised qualifications in this field is the City & Guilds 2391-52 Level 3 Award in Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations.

At MJ Electrical Training, we make it easy and affordable for electricians across Plymouth, Devon, and the South West to gain this sought-after qualification. Our flexible online course is just £234.00, with the final assessments available at our approved centre in Exeter — just over an hour from Plymouth — as well as Bristol, West London, and Manchester.

Whether you’re self-employed, working for a local contractor, or preparing to carry out EICRs, this course gives you the technical knowledge and legal competence to inspect installations and issue documentation in line with current standards.

What the 2391-52 Qualification Covers

The 2391-52 brings together two previously separate qualifications — the 2394 (Initial Verification) and 2395 (Periodic Inspection & Testing) — into one comprehensive course. It’s designed for electricians who already hold a Level 3 electrotechnical qualification and want to expand their skill set in a practical, career-advancing way.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Carry out inspection and testing on both new and existing installations

  • Verify systems before energising

  • Perform periodic inspections to ensure safety and compliance

  • Understand and apply key documents like BS 7671, Guidance Note 3, and the Electricity at Work Regulations

  • Complete documentation such as EICs, EICRs, and test result schedules

From safe isolation to interpreting test results, everything in the course mirrors real-life responsibilities — so you’re ready to perform with confidence on site.

Study Online – Learn When It Suits You

Our 2391-52 course is delivered entirely through online self-paced learning, giving you the flexibility to study around your work and personal commitments. You can start any time — there are no fixed course dates.

This is ideal for electricians in Plymouth, Saltash, Ivybridge, or the surrounding areas, who may not be able to attend regular in-person sessions. You’ll have access to engaging online materials including:

  • Video tutorials

  • Worked examples

  • Practice questions

  • Downloadable documents

With tutor support included, help is always available if you get stuck or need guidance before your exam.

You’ll only need to travel to Exeter once — to complete your final assessments.

The Assessment Process

To achieve the full 2391-52 qualification, you’ll complete:

  • A multiple-choice online exam (Unit 052)

  • A hands-on practical assessment (Unit 502)

Both are held in person — with Exeter being the closest centre for candidates from Plymouth.

The theory exam is a 120-minute open-book test with 60 questions. You’ll be allowed to use BS 7671 (18th Edition) and IET Guidance Note 3, just like in a real job. A pass typically requires around 75%.

The practical assessment involves demonstrating:

  • Safe isolation

  • Full electrical test procedures (continuity, insulation, RCDs, etc.)

  • Accurate completion of accompanying paperwork

It’s a real-world test of your skill and professionalism — and it’s recognised across the industry.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is designed for working electricians with practical experience and an existing Level 3 qualification. It’s ideal if you:

  • Are expanding into EICRs or landlord safety reports

  • Need to meet legal requirements for inspection and testing

  • Want to formalise your skills to stand out to clients and employers

It’s not suitable for complete beginners or those without Level 3 training. You should already be confident using test instruments and reading circuit diagrams.

If you’re a sole trader in Plymouth looking to grow your services, or a team member preparing for more responsibility, this qualification is a smart investment.
