Is your application on hold? or need an ECS approved Health & Safety course?

ECS Labourer Card: Test or Course? Here’s What You Actually need.
If you’re applying for your ECS Labourer Card, you might have come across the ECS Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) test and assumed it’s a necessary step, depending on your situation it may not be.
For the ECS Labourer Card, you do not need to take the ECS HSE test—unless you already hold an approved electrical qualification. Instead, the requirement is to complete one ECS-approved Health & Safety course. That’s it. No separate test needed.
No ECS HSE Test Required — Just an ECS-Approved Course
This confusion often arises because the ECS HSE test is commonly required for other ECS cards, card renewals, or for individuals who already have approved qualifications. But for the Labourer Card—and other entry-level cards—only an ECS-approved Health & Safety course is required.
At MJ Electrical Training, we offer one of the most convenient and cost-effective options available: the SPA (Safety Passport Alliance) Health & Safety Core Day, delivered entirely online.
SPA Health & Safety Core Day – Fully Accepted by ECS
✅ ECS-approved
✅ No ECS HSE test required
✅ One-day online course
✅ Delivered via Microsoft Teams
✅ Only £174.00 (Inc. VAT)
✅ Available weekly
Once you complete this course, you’ve fully satisfied the Health & Safety requirement for your ECS Labourer Card — without needing to sit the ECS HSE test.
Who Needs This Course?
If you’re applying for the ECS Labourer, Site Support, or Cable Installation cards — and you don’t hold an approved qualification (such as an NVQ Level 3 or completed apprenticeship) — this is the correct and required route:
✅ Complete one ECS-approved Health & Safety course
❌ No need to take the ECS Health, Safety & Environment test
Our SPA Health & Safety Core Day is the simplest, most affordable, and fully compliant option — all delivered online with weekly availability.
What Other Courses Are ECS-Approved?
If you or your employer prefer an alternative to the SPA Core Day, ECS also accepts the following Health & Safety courses:
SPA Health & Safety Core Day (offered by MJ Electrical Training)
CCNSG Safety Passport (National, Supervisory, or Renewal)
ECITB Health & Safety Passport
CITB Health & Safety Awareness (classroom or online)
CITB SSSTS or SMSTS
NEBOSH Health & Safety qualifications
Construction Skills Register (CSR)
While all are valid, many of these options are more expensive, classroom-based, or less flexible. The SPA Core Day remains the best value and most accessible for new entrants.
Don’t Waste Time Booking the ECS HSE Test
If you’re applying for the ECS Labourer Card, taking the ECS HSE test is not only unnecessary — it’s not accepted as a substitute for an ECS-approved Health & Safety course.
✅ One ECS-approved Health & Safety course is all you need
❌ The ECS HSE test is not required and does not meet the criteria
Unfortunately, many applicants delay their ECS card because they mistakenly take the HSE test first, only to find out they still need to complete a course.
