Start Your Electrical Career at Farnborough Tech – The Smart Choice for Future Electricians
If you’re looking to build a long-term, hands-on, and well-paid career, becoming an electrician is one of the best paths you can take — and Farnborough Technical College is a fantastic place to start. Whether you’re leaving school, switching careers, or looking for an apprenticeship, getting the right electrical training and qualifications will open the door to countless job opportunities in the UK’s thriving electrical industry.
At MJ Electrical Training, we work with individuals across Farnborough and Hampshire who are keen to enter the electrical trade. We deliver key qualifications like the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations and Health & Safety training for the ECS Labourer Card, both of which are essential stepping stones on your journey.
Why Choose a Career as an Electrician?
Electricians are always in demand — from domestic home wiring to industrial and commercial electrical installations. It’s a skilled trade with excellent earning potential, the option to become self-employed, and real job security.
By training at Farnborough Tech, you’re getting a solid foundation in electrical installation in a recognised learning environment, with the support of local training providers like MJ Electrical Training who can deliver industry-recognised qualifications online or in-person.
Step 1: Get Your ECS Labourer Card – Your Gateway Into the Industry
Before you can work on most construction sites in the UK, you’ll need an ECS Labourer Card — it’s the electrical industry’s version of the CSCS card.
This card proves you’ve passed the required Health & Safety training, and it significantly boosts your employability. Just search any job board — Indeed, Facebook, LinkedIn — and you’ll see the phrase “ECS Card required” again and again.
We run the required Health & Safety course every two weeks, and you can book directly here:

Step 2: Complete the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
In addition to the ECS Labourer Card, many employers also expect you to hold the 18th Edition qualification — this demonstrates your understanding of the current BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, which is essential for working safely and legally as an electrician in the UK.
We offer this as a flexible online course with either a home-based or centre-based exam.

Step 3: Gain Real-World Experience
Once you’ve got your ECS Card and 18th Edition certificate, the next step is getting hands-on experience. This is where going to college like Farnborough Tech pays off — you’ll be surrounded by like-minded learners, have access to apprenticeship opportunities, and can get connected with employers.
You can also search the Electrical Competent Persons Register to find local electricians or contractors near you who might be hiring.
Step 4: Work Towards Your NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation
To become a fully qualified electrician, you need to complete the Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation. This can only be done while working in the industry, as it requires practical on-site assessments and a portfolio of your work.
Step 5: Become Fully Qualified and Boost Your Career
Once your NVQ is complete, you’ll be able to apply for your ECS Gold Card, which proves your status as a fully qualified electrician.
After that, if you want to go self-employed or carry out domestic installations independently, you’ll want to register with schemes like:
These are the government-approved organisations that allow you to sign off electrical work legally.
