Protection Against Noise

Since 2005 the ‘Control of Noise at Work Regulations’ stated that organisations must protect workers hearing by controlling noise levels in the workplace.

Noise hazards are often difficult to spot. Without suitable measuring equipment, they often go unnoticed. Workers are particularly at risk if they work near loud machinery, with power tools such as drills, breakers and grinders, on or near construction and demolition sites or in manufacturing and factories.

Noise hazards have the ability to affect hearing and, in some cases, can lead to permanent damage or even hearing loss. The damage can be quick to happen if you are subjected to a short, sharp, deafening noise, but often it takes much longer, sometimes many months or years, for a worker to become permanently affected. Because the effects can take quite some time, it can become too late to do anything about them.

Excessive noise exposure can lead to long-term health effects such as hearing loss and possible tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a constant ringing or noise in one or both ears that is NOT caused by external sound. Tinnitus is a common problem, especially with older adults and those exposed to high noise levels for prolonged periods. Noise-induced hearing loss occurs because excessive noise damages the delicate hearing mechanism of the inner ear.

Noise is measured in decibels (dB) and the Noise Regulations outline levels of exposure that employees are allowed to be exposed to over a working day or week.

The course will communicate the essential information needed for workers to reduce the risks of workplace noise exposure. The course considers the hierarchy of controls in order to reduce the risk of noise hazards:

• Elimination.
• Substitution.
• Engineering Controls.
• Administrative Controls.
• Personal Protective Equipment.

At the end of our essential e-learning Protection Against Noise Awareness Course, candidates will complete a multiple-choice test. Successful candidates will then be awarded an e certificate which can be used as evidence of their continuing professional development, used when looking to gain employment or further careers, used to update CPD and will overall demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of noise in the workplace.

This course will provide candidates with a fundamental understanding and knowledge of the risks of noise in the workplace.

By the end of the e-learning course, candidates will have learned about:

• Recognise the risks associated with excessive noise.
• Identify sources of noise.
• Understand Upper & Lower Noise Action Levels.
• Appreciate the requirements of the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
• Be able to protect yourself against hearing damage.

This online awareness course is designed for workers with little or no knowledge of how to protect themselves against the effects of noise in the workplace.
