Our SPA Core Day course is a trusted path for individuals in diverse industries to build essential health and safety knowledge, as well as a key step in applying for or renewing an ECS Labourer’s Card. While we primarily serve the electrical sector, our doors are open to candidates across all sectors who are seeking a solid foundation in workplace safety.
Why Choose the SPA Health & Safety Core Day?
The SPA Health & Safety Core Day is part of the larger Safety Pass Alliance (SPA) Scheme, designed to equip participants with the practical knowledge and skills needed to ensure safety in various high-risk industries, such as Food & Drink, Petrol Retail, and Mineral Products. Completing the Core Day provides the equivalent of a Level 1 QCF qualification, which, combined with the CITB Health and Safety Environment Test, serves as a widely recognized ECS exemption.
Course Content and Structure
Our SPA Core Day training emphasizes essential health and safety principles across six distinct modules, covering everything from workplace safety to environmental responsibility. Here’s what each module covers:
Module 1: Organising for Safety – Learn about the legal responsibilities of both employers and employees, identify vulnerable workers, and understand the role of enforcing authorities.
Module 2: The Workplace – Focus on creating a safe workspace, from navigating confined spaces to working at heights, and understanding the permit-to-work process.
Module 3: Tools, Plant, and Machinery – Gain insights into the safe use of both powered and non-powered tools, as well as the risks associated with workplace transport.
Module 4: Health – Dive into health risks and controls related to hazardous substances, musculoskeletal concerns, noise exposure, and stress management.
Module 5: Procedures – Explore the significance of emergency protocols and well-defined workplace procedures, such as first aid arrangements.
Module 6: Environment – Discover the importance of environmental responsibility, waste control, and emergency preparedness.
By the end of the day, participants will have a well-rounded grasp of essential safety practices, risk assessment, and hazard identification. The course also emphasises the role of personal conduct in maintaining a safe workplace, encouraging each participant to contribute actively to a culture of safety.
What to Expect from the Online Training Experience
Conducted via Microsoft Teams as a Virtual Instructor-Led Training (vILT), our SPA Core Day course is accessible from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Here’s how to prepare for the training:
Ensure access to a desktop, laptop, or tablet with a camera and microphone.
Set up in a quiet, distraction-free environment.
Have your photographic ID ready (Driving Licence, SPA Card, or Passport).
Complete the SPA Training Course Delegate Information Form and email a passport-style headshot for your course profile.
Before the course, we’ll send your SPA course books by post, along with the Microsoft Teams link to join.
On the day, we recommend joining a few minutes early to register and prepare for an interactive day of learning. Our course is structured with regular breaks, including a 30-minute lunch break, to keep you engaged and refreshed.
Completing the Assessment and Earning Your SPA Passport
The SPA Health & Safety Core Day assessment ensures participants demonstrate their knowledge through a series of questions in a Microsoft Form. To maintain the integrity of the assessment, participants are required to clear their desks of any materials and keep cameras on while completing the assessment.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an SPA Health & Safety Passport, recognized as a valuable asset in supporting ECS and CSCS applications. This passport affirms a participant’s commitment to high health and safety standards, meeting industry requirements and contributing to a safer workplace.
Why Online Training Works for SPA Health & Safety
Online training has become a preferred option for many candidates because it allows for flexible learning without the logistical complexities of attending in person. The focused, modular approach of the SPA Core Day allows you to cover all essential topics efficiently, emphasising practical referencing over memorization. Whether you’re looking to obtain your ECS Labourer’s Card or enhance your general workplace safety skills, our online SPA course provides an effective, straightforward path to achieving your goals.
