Beginning as an electrical labourer, trainee, or just looking to change your career path by gaining an ECS Labourer Card indicates you have met the minimum requirements to assist competent, qualified electricians in their work.

When you gain the ECS Labourer Card, you must work under the supervision of a competent electrician whilst completing any electrical installations. This will ensure safety and efficiency.

The pinnacle of the electrical industry is achieving the JIB Gold Card. But this takes time, requiring plenty of experience and industry-approved qualifications. The Labourer Card provides a valuable opportunity for newcomers, trainees, and those looking to start in the electrical industry. Gaining the ECS Labourers Card will greatly benefit those aspiring to reach the peak of the electrical industry to become a fully qualified electrician and gain a JIB Gold Card.

There are two routes available for candidates to gain an ECS Labourer Card.

Route 2 is the most common. You will need to complete an ECS recognised Health and Safety Course. Also known as an ECS Health & Safety Exemption. Route 1 explained...

If you already have a JIB-approved electrical theory qualification such as C&G 2365, 2330 or 2360 (or EAL equivalents), these will be accepted for your Labourer Card. An additional list of accredited courses that meet the qualifying criteria is outlined below.

It’s essential to mention that candidates who hold Level 3 qualifications are less likely to be looking to apply for an ECS Labourers Card through the ECS and may want to consider the route for gaining a JIB Gold Card. Their high competency level indicates they are well on their path to becoming fully qualified electricians.

If you hold any of these qualifications, you may still need to pass the ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment.

Route 2 explained...

For those not holding any of the above recognised qualifications to complete the ECS Labourer Card application process, you must complete an ECS recognised health and safety course to get the card.

The list below outlines all the approved courses set by the ECS. For confirmation of the list, please visit the ECS website:

Route 2 applicants must also prove they are actively engaged in work within the electrotechnical sector. This proof can be provided in a variety of different ways, including:

If the person you are working for has applied for an ECS Labourer Card on your behalf and this has been done through the Employer Portal on the ECS website, then no further action is required from you.

If you have or plan to gain work through a recruitment agency, you must request proof from the company regarding the duration of your agreement as an electrical labourer.

If you are in college or adult education and are enrolled in a related course. You must provide documented proof of your participation in the course from the college, school or training provider.

Finally, to obtain approval, you can submit an offer of employment letter, an employment contract, or a recent payslip from a respected business in the electrical industry.

It’s important to note that only after completing all the steps above can you complete the ECS Labourer Card application process. You must validate your eligibility and expertise in the field.
