If you are planning or thinking about working in the electrical industry, you may have either heard about or been told about an ECS card. It is similar to a CSCS card but designed specifically for the electrical sector.
The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) use cards to verify the competency of electrical workers and are used by construction sites as a pre-requisite for gaining site access and from my experience, this also extends to large manufacturing, industrial premises, schools and government buildings. Even if you are not planning on working on one of these types of sites today, it still might be worth considering starting the ECS application process.
And, if you are new to the industry, most recruitment agencies and job advertisements include an ECS card as a requirement.
The type of card you apply for will depend on the qualifications and experience you have. If you are already a fully qualified electrician you will want to apply for a JIB Gold Card, whereas if your new or in training it will be the Labourers or Trainee Card.
To apply for your ECS card, you will need to have completed an approved Health and Safety course to complete the application process. Our IOSH Working Safely course with invigilated final examination is an approved Health and Safety exemption.
The following link will take you to the ECS website showing you all the different Health and Exemptions available.
Your ECS card will show a current photo ID of yourself proving your identity. The card will also show your approved occupation e.g. electrical labourer, trainee, or approved electrician. The more experience and qualifications you gain you will be able to move up the different levels of the scheme.
Our IOSH Working Safely course with local invigilated examination is often combined by candidates with the 18th edition IET wiring regulations. They take both examinations on the same day.
The complete process can be broken down using the following stages:
Obtain an ECS-approved Health and Safety ‘Valid Exemption’. The IOSH Working Safely with invigilated classroom-led exam meets the ECS requirements as a ‘Valid Exemption’.
Register for a MyECS account through the ECS website. You will make your application through your MyECS account. At this stage, you will need to show you hold the appropriate qualifications for the card you are applying for – this will include your IOSH Working Safely certificate. These are uploaded as scans. You will also need to provide good-quality digital photographs for your card.
Complete the application process and pay the appropriate fee this is around £22. There is currently a two to three-week processing timescale for ECS-card applications.
What is in the final examination?
Your final IOSH Working Safely exam will be broken down into two parts with a combined assessment time of 30 minutes.
Part A – Multiple-choice question paper. The pass mark is 20 out of 33 correctly answered questions.
Part B – Multiple-choice, hazard-spotting exercise. The pass mark is 10 out of 16 correctly answered questions.
To pass, you must achieve 30 out of 49 across both assessments.
