If you are looking to gain or renew an Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) card, you will need to either complete a Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment or hold a ‘Valid Exemption’ – meaning you hold a qualification that meets or exceeds the required level of health and safety knowledge.

Our IOSH Working Safely awareness course with invigilated exam is an approved ‘Valid Exemption’ and will allow successful candidates to complete their ECS-card applications quickly and more efficiently than using alternative routes.

The IOSH Working Safely online awareness course and exam has been designed to give electricians, electrical trainees, electrician’s mates, electrical improvers and anyone needing to access construction sites in an electrical capacity a streamlined, cost-effective and direct approach to gaining their ECS Health and Safety ‘Valid Exemption’.

Working through the learning outcomes, we cover what you need to know to pass your exam. There are test-your-knowledge and hazard-spotting exercises and more than 200 practice test questions to help reinforce the course material.

Our practice mock exams are considered some of the best in the industry and give you an idea of what to expect in the final IOSH Working Safely exam.

Tutor support is available should you need it.

You will be given an in-depth overview of what to expect on your exam day, helping you to fully prepare.

On successfully passing the IOSH Working Safely exam, your results will be emailed to you the same day, with your hard-copy certificate arriving within 21 days from your exam date. To help speed up your ECS-application process, we will also email you a scanned copy of your certificate.

If you are in the electrical industry or starting a new career as an electrician, you may have either heard about or been told about an ECS card. The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) use cards to verify the competency of electrical workers. The type of card you apply for will depend on the qualifications and experience you have.

If you are planning on starting work in the electrical industry, or are looking to renew an ECS card, you will need an approved Health and Safety qualification to complete the application process.

Undertaking the IOSH Working Safely awareness course and exam by MJ Electrical Training is the first step in completing the application process in either gaining your first or renewing your ECS card.

The complete process can be broken down using the following stages:

Stage 1

Obtain an ECS-approved Health and Safety ‘Valid Exemption’. The IOSH Working Safely with invigilated classroom-led exam meets the ECS requirements as a ‘Valid Exemption’.

Stage 2

Register for a MyECS account through the ECS website. You will make your application through your MyECS account. At this stage, you will need to show you hold the appropriate qualifications for the card you are applying for – this will include your IOSH Working Safely certificate. These are uploaded as scans. You will also need to provide good-quality digital photographs for your card.

Stage 3

Complete the application process and pay the appropriate fee, this is around £22. There is currently a two to three-week processing timescale for ECS-card applications.

Final exam.

Your final IOSH Working Safely exam will be broken down into two parts with a combined assessment time of 30 minutes.

Part A – Multiple-choice question paper. The pass mark is 20 out of 33 correctly answered questions.

Part B – Multiple-choice, hazard-spotting exercise. The pass mark is 10 out of 16 correctly answered questions.

To pass, you must achieve 30 out of 49 across both assessments.

"Great company to do your 18th Edition thought. Both Simon and he's colleague were very helpful. Both on the day at the test centre and also with help with revision on their online service and also with some one to one help pre the exam. Can't rate them enough for there efforts and being able to still deliver high quality training. Even in these tough times we all fine ourselves in. "

"MJ Training was perfect for my needs, Simon was extremely supportive all the way, and I could not have asked for anything more. I passed both my 18th and Part P on the same day. And without Simon's advice and support I would not have had such a great result. The training was well planned on the day and Daniel was great and made us all feel at ease on the day. I highly recommend MJ Training and I shall do so to my friends and colleague's in the future. Thank you again Simon and Daniel. I am so looking forward to my new venture in electrical installation work, as I feel confident and able thanks to this course. Jim Dorset. "
