What to Expect on Exam Day

Here’s a quick overview of what will happen on the day of your City & Guilds exam — please read carefully so you’re fully prepared.

✅ Arrival & ID Check

When you arrive at the exam centre, you’ll be asked to show some form of ID. Your name should match the one on your City & Guilds exam keycode, but don’t worry if there’s a minor mismatch (e.g. a small spelling error) — as long as it’s clearly you, it’s fine.

Accepted forms of ID include:

  • Passport (preferred)
  • Driving Licence (preferred)
  • Copies of the above are also accepted

💻 Getting Set Up for the Exam

You’ll be taken to a workstation where the City & Guilds exam platform is already open, showing the screen that says Enter Keycode.

You’ll be given a printed copy of your Keycode and PIN (these are sent out the weekend before your exam).

At the computer, you’ll:

  1. Enter your Keycode
  2. Confirm your personal details
  3. Enter your PIN to begin the exam

You’ll be shown some brief on-screen instructions before the exam starts. Once you click Start, the exam begins — and it will automatically end once your time is up:

  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382): 2 hours
  • Building Regulations (2383/2393): 1 hour or 40 Minutes

📖 What You Can Bring (Permitted Materials)

This is an open-book exam, so you’re allowed to bring:

  • For the 18th Edition exam an original copy of : BS 7671 Wiring Regulations (Brown A4 book)
  • For the Building Regulations exam an original copy of : The Electrician’s Guide to the Building Regulations (Green A5 book with brown stripe)

Please note that digital copies of permitted materials are strictly not allowed in the exam room.

Attempting to use a digital version (e.g. on a phone, tablet, or other device) will result in your exam being terminated immediately, all fees forfeited, and a case being opened with City & Guilds. This may impact your ability to sit future exams with them.

Only official printed hard copies of the permitted publications are allowed for use during the exam.

You may also bring:

  • Scrap paper and a pen
  • A basic (non-programmable) calculator

If you forget these and the centre may have spares — but it’s best to bring your own.

🚫 What’s Not Allowed

You must not bring or use any of the following during the exam:

  • Mobile phones
  • Smart watches
  • Tablets or any internet-connected devices

Bringing any of these devices into the exam room — even if they are switched off — may result in your exam being terminated and all fees forfeited.

Please ensure all such items are left outside the exam room or securely stored away before your exam begins.

📩 After the Exam

Your exam will automatically submit at the end of the allowed time. You won’t receive your result immediately — only I can release results to candidates. These are processed after the exam, and chasing won’t speed this up 😊
